Intricate textiles from the Andes

IDABEL, Okla. — The Egyptian mummy visiting the Museum of the Red River in Idabel will be going away soon, but in its place will come a visiting exhibit that explores the ancient roots of the medium that launched the Industrial Revolution — textiles.

“Precolumbian Textiles of the Andes” features beautifully crafted cloth work from the mountain region of Peru, Bolivia and northern Chile, an art form known to have been in practice at least as early as 2500 B.C. In these early works, native varieties of cotton and other plant fibers were twined, looped and loom-woven.

“These pieces represent some of the most intricate and beautiful textiles produced in the region during prehistoric times,” assistant curator and keeper of collections Daniel Vick said. “The Museum is very proud of the works displayed in this exhibit.”

The mummy was brought to the museum as part of the annual Explorers Camp, a two-week program that teaches younger children about history. This year’s program focused on ancient Egypt, with the borrowed mummy providing a learning tool for program participants.

The mummy is on loan from the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Shawnee, Okla.and has been on display since mid-June.

The mummy will leave Sept. 15, according to program curator Paulene LaGasse.

“It was really a neat experience for the kids,” LaGasse said.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The ancient textiles exhibit will remain on display several weeks.

It represents native works thousands of years old.

By 1500 B.C., animal fibers — particularly those from American camelids such as llamas, alpacas and vicuna — were in general use, Vick said. Within 500 years of that, virtually every known weaving technique was in use in the region, as well as a wide variety of naturally occurring dying agents, he explained.

Most of the works were created by women, who typically filled the role of weavers in indigenous societies. They used simple backstrap looms to create most of the pieces featured in this collection.

Though most innovation and production were centered in the Andean highlands, most prehistoric textiles were found in the desert region running along the Pacific coast. The consistently dry weather patterns allow relatively delicate fabrics to be better preserved than the wet-dry conditions of the highlands, Vick said.

The works in this exhibit also represent an invaluable economic resource for those who produced these works.

“In a cash-free economy, crafts often embody wealth, especially if everyone understands the relative values of the materials used and the time spent in creating the work,” Vick said. “In the Andes, textiles represent such wealth.”

A talented weaver could bring economic success for a family, and so the most desired brides were those with a talent in weaving, Vick said.

“This exhibit is a chance for people to not only see some amazing works, but learn about some of the social structures of the societies that created them,” Vick said.

Limited fabric choices allow manufacturers to buy their fabric in volume, keeping their costs down. If you go with a smaller company, you may find yourself with more choices -- or even the ability to supply your own fabric. When choosing a fabric type for your upholstered furniture, keep in mind that durability is a key consideration. Some materials commonly used include:

- Acrylic: Originally developed as imitation wool, this synthetic fabric resists wear, wrinkling, soiling and fading.

- Cotton: A natural fiber, cotton resists wear, fading and piling but is less resistant to soiling. Blending cotton with other fabrics can address soiling issues.

- Nylon: One of the most resilient fabrics, nylon is rarely used alone. Most often, it is blended with other fibers, making it one of the strongest upholstery fabrics. It’s highly resistant to soiling and fading.

- Olefin: Often used in blends with other fibers, olefin is a perfect choice for furniture that will get heavy use and wear.

- Polyester: Most often blended with other fibers, polyester resists wrinkles.

- Rayon: Developed as a silk alternative, this synthetic is more durable than silk but does wrinkle. (ARA)

However, if there's one thing that professional designers agree on, it's the capacity of fabric in various textures and colors to bring life to a room. Fabric, when incorporated properly, can define the theme for the season or the mood of the room, and can bring life to even the dullest spaces.

Depending on its use, fabrics can bring unique moods to a room. Heavy, rich-colored and textured fabrics usually bring a more formal, ornate feel to a room, while sheer fabrics used in windows, made to hang over bare walls, or even just thrown over the back of a couch or an ottoman bring a fun, flirty feel to a room.

Window Treatments

A window positioned anywhere in a room provides a dramatic statement, a focal point, or may even provide an opportunity to bring the outdoors inside the room. With window treatments, fabrics may be used in curtains and window valances.

In order to provide a dramatic statement in a room via the window treatment, you can make use of two extreme types of fabrics, either heavy, rich-colored fabrics, or sheer draperies: or possibly a combination of both. Heavy, rich-colored fabrics make a dramatic statement with their strong colors and eye-catching patterns (like damasks, flower prints, stripes, etc.). Sheer draperies, on the other hand, bring a light, sunny feeling to the room by letting in just enough sunlight, yet allowing for a light and flirty curtain solution.

Used together, putting sheers behind the heavy fabric draperies, provides texture and color contrast. The heavy fabric draperies may be opened in the morning with the use of trimmings and tassels, allowing for sunlight to come through the sheer draperies. The Sitting Area

In rooms like the living room and the dining area, the sitting area comprises much of the space. This means that most of the design that can be incorporated into the room must come from the sitting area, if it is to make a visual impact.

For the living room, fabrics are the best solutions to provide either temporary or permanent overhauls for the sofa or couch. Sofas that are badly stained or worn may be taken to a shop for re-upholstery. When re-upholstering the furniture, the extent of damage equates to the amount of repair that the sofa will undergo some may only need a small amount of repair while others need major repair: such as the foam completely changed or complete over-haul. Re-upholstery entails the permanent change of the outer skin or covering of the sofa using new fabric or a covering material such as faux leather. When choosing the fabric for re-upholstering, choose one that will blend in with various color schemes, as re-upholstery is permanent in nature.

For temporary punches of life, color, or even design themes, slipcovers are the better choice. Slipcovers are available ready-made in department stores, or you may have them custom-made especially for your sofa to assure a snug-fit. Slipcovers will allow for seasonal color changes of the room, and even for mixing and matching the sofa with other furniture or accessories to better suit the decor of the room.

For the dining area, the dining chairs or stools may be fitted with covers and skirts for a more decorative effect or to better continue a color scheme in the room.

Used properly, fabrics achieve design changes at a cheaper price and with less effort. Fabrics take the place of added accessories and furniture, create as much impact as a new coat of paint or wallpaper, and allow for versatility of design by mixing and matching, and temporary solutions such as slipcovers at a fraction of the cost of permanent changes.

Fabrics, textiles from banana fibre?

Fabrics and textiles woven from fine quality banana fibre could be the next big thing in fashion if research carried out by the National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) here bears fruit.

The NRCB has joined hands with the Central Institute of Cotton Technology, Mumbai, with an aim to produce quality fibres by improving the retting process, adding certain non hazardous chemicals to banana fibre to produce lengthy fibres, with adequate strength and lustre.

This process was thought of as banana fibre drawn from the stem of the plant is brittle and long fibres cannot be drawn from it, NRCB Director Dr M M Mustafa said.

He said, NRCB had obtained special varieties of banana plants from Philippines and the Middle East, which yield only the fibre and not the fruit or flower.

However, tests like long term durability of fabric, retention of fast colour dyeing and stitching capability had to be done before the technology could be transferred to commercial production.

NRCB scientists were evolving a method by which banana stem juice could be made to powder form, which has curative properties in treating diseases like kidney stones. Once perfected, the technology would be transferred to pharmaceutical industries, he said.

The centre has also developed a patent technology to extract wine from banana skin and had joined hands with a group in Belgaum in Maharashtra to commercially produce banana wine. A pilot plant would soon be set up, pending approval from the union government. PTI

Synthetic fibers are produced from chemical substances. These fibers are manufactured from organic intermediates drawn from petroleum, coal and natural gas. While natural fibers are fibers acquired from a plant, animal or mineral. The commercially vital natural fibers are those cellulosic fibers taken from the seed hairs, stems, and leaves of plants. From animals, protein fibers are drawn the hair, fur or cocoons. Natural fiber has only one meaning derived from animals and plants.

The fibers are then processed to come out with different kinds of textiles serving different functions for today’s household. But textiles have been also intertwined with historical facts and traditions. Today’s textiles have undergone innovative concepts not before seen and done. High technology has made the progress possible.

There are establishments engaged in manufacturing and fiber from cotton, silk, manmade fibers, wool or similar animal fibers. The vital products in this grouping consist of crochet, sewing, darning, tatting, embroidery, knitting and other threads for handicraft. There are other classifications such as hemp, flax and ramie.

Textile is such a versatile material and has multipurpose functions and uses. You can wear it, sit on it or lie on it. For art there is nothing better and more long lasting than textile as canvass. The industry is thriving. People would never run out of ideas to make the industry better and stronger. And to make the textile industry a sustainable business helping economies and countries.

The textile industry is consists of some segments. The thread mill like most sections of the textile industry is continuing to deal with growing international competition. However, the future is optimistic. Thread sales appeared to be good. Natural fibers are outselling manmade fibers as demand for carpet; clothing and furnishings are going well as with the economy.

The use of natural fibers at the industrial level has greatly enhanced the sustainability of the environment. Parts being constructed within some industries are mostly from natural fibers. The building industry and the automotive industry have taken into consideration of creating parts and spare parts from only the natural fibers.

The industries are keeping their part of the bargain. The textile industry is encouraging the use of natural fibers of all its needs. Any inroads toward synthetic fibers being use are thwarted right away. This is helping the textile industry in most cases.

But most of all textiles use is much widespread in clothing, household furnishings. As in art textiles of different types and kinds are carefully chosen to express traditions and historical facts. In the homes textiles like silk, cotton, canvases are almost in every part of the household. People will continue to support the textile industry because it is a very necessary commodity. More than 1,000 suppliers will present home textiles from floor to ceiling at Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles 2008. Yang Donghui, president of the China Association of Home Textiles said textile firms, once an export engine of China, are fighting for their survival in 2008 with yuan appreciation, rising costs and dismal overseas market hit by the subprime crisis. Due to what some here call a "global recession in home textiles," the home textile sector has been facing problems of downturn in demand and prices for the last year, even as raw material prices are maintaining their rising trend. Some small mills have shut down, but the bigger players are resisting the situation. So, Intertextile Shanghai Home Textiles will be especially significant from the manufacture’s point of view.

Yang Zhaohua, vice president of The Sub-Council of Textile Industry, CCPIT also said China’s home textile industry had entered a crucial phase of upgrading instead of simple expansion in quantity.
