1. Colors:
Wear this season’s hottest colors: hunter green, deep purple, dark blues, shades of gray and, of course, black.
Tip: Your shirt and tie should share a common color so they compliment each other and work together.

Stripes, plaids and polka dots are big right now. Paisleys have taken a back seat at the moment so tuck the majority of them away for now.

Trends and fads come and go, but scarves have withstood the test of time - and the seasons - and are here to stay.
In the warmer weather, scarves tend to be made out of lightweight materials such as silk, satin or chiffon whereas cotton and cashmere scarves are commonly paired with a winter coat.
Not only do the materials and patterns of scarves vary but so do the way in which they can be worn.
"I wear them all types of ways," said Carolyn DiMarco, a 1st-semester exploratory major. "I drape them around my neck, wrap it around my neck, or let it hang in the back."
Part of the reason scarves have so much versatility is because they are made of various shapes, which allow for creativity.
"I have long and skinny scarves that I let hang very loosely but I also have square scarves that I fold to make a triangle shape and wrap around my neck," said Laura Baumann, a 1st-semester physiology and neurobiology major.
A scarf adds an extra detail that will help you stand out. It can add a touch of color to a neutral color palate, make an outfit more sophisticated, or create a natural and flowy element to an outfit.
"When I wear colored scarves I use them as an accent if my outfit consists of mostly neutral colors," Baumann said.
The variety of scarves on the market can be overwhelming but it is important to consider your personal wardrobe when purchasing them. Often times a scarf may be appealing but it might not necessarily go well with your clothes, especially when dealing with patterns. Particular patterns can often take away from the outfit by being overwhelming.
"Stripes and solid colors are easier to pair with outfits than patterns but it all depends on the patterns you’re dealing with," Baumann said. "You don’t want the pattern to hide your outfit or make it seem too ’busy.’"
The versatility of scarves extends beyond materials, patterns, and ways to wear them. Many people wear them as belts, headwear, or, as seen more recently, tie them around their purses. According to the Style Watch section of People magazine’s Web site, stars are

They’re scarves, Jim, but not as we know them. You know the cosy warm kind; the sort that you root out from the wardrobe at this time of year? These are not them. These scarves are strictly for show. Welcome to the world of the status symbol scarf.
It used to be that a woman’s handbag was her biggest status symbol: something she saved up for and wore with great pride. But with designer bags now costing the same as a small family car, it’s little wonder that women have started looking for some other — cheaper — way to shout their fashion credentials from the rooftops. And so the designer scarf has become the new entry-level point for customers wanting to buy into a luxury brand.
Arguably, this idea really originated with Hermès, one of the most exclusive — and expensive — brands in the world. Its silk scarves, especially those in rare, limited-edition prints, change hands for astronomical amounts, but you can still go in store today and purchase a lovely one for £140. Compare this with the two- year waiting list for a £6,000 Hermès Kelly bag, and it soon becomes apparent why the scarves have such appeal to lovers of the Hermès brand.
Louis Vuitton is another proponent of the status symbol scarf, with Marc Jacobs taking the concept and making it thoroughly modern thanks to another innovative collaboration. The Sprouse scarf, a £300 cashmere beauty with a print designed by the legendary Stephen Sprouse, has sold out in London, New York and Paris — a direct result, no doubt, of Kate Moss, who has had one surgically attached to her neck all autumn. That is, when it’s not being borrowed by her on-off boyfriend, Jamie Hince. Any Sprouses that were left over after Moss bagged one in all three colours were promptly snapped up by the fashion pack, who, to a (wo)man, seemed to be wearing them at the recent round of shows.
Other status symbol scarves currently being flaunted include a cashmere Burberry scarf in a faded version of its house check (£400), a skull print scarf by Alexander McQueen (£110), a chainmail trimmed scarf by Lanvin (£250) and a floral print silk scarf by Balenciaga, which, at £180, is a darned sight more affordable than its £1,035 Lariat bag.
Obviously, “affordability” is relative — especially these days. And yes, we could all pop down to Primark and bag a scarf for £1. But hands up whose desire for luxury has died just because their funds have? If you love fashion, you love fashion: whatever the economic climate. Status symbol scarves are simply luxury for a whole lot less.

With fall right around the corner and the summer heat still lingering, it is easy to fall into a “What do I wear?” scenario with your wardrobe. This time of year, stores are bringing out the new fall fashions, but, without the cooler temps, a lot of these designs are hard to wear. You can add transitional pieces to your wardrobe during this time of year; it’s a great way to not look too summery, but also not be miserable wearing heavier fall garments.
One of the coolest and most versatile transitional pieces right now that has appeared up and down the runway is the scarf. With the many different textures and ways to wear the scarf, it is a great option.
The scarf is not just an accompaniment to a heavy coat anymore: it is a solo fashion item. With that in mind, let’s explore the textures, colors, and ways in which you can wear the scarf.
Texture is very important during these hotter fall months. It is important to not look too summery, but you also want to be comfortable. This season, the scarf comes in some fabrics that are not too heavy; we are seeing the scarf in a linen and cotton blend, as well as in silk. These options are great for this time of year. The linen-cotton blend hangs with a raw edginess to it, and the silk is definitely one that you can dress up or dress down.
Color is also very important for this transitional time. You are still wearing a few of your lighter colored summer items, but are starting to incorporate the darker fall items into your wardrobe. Okay, now my favorite part of this trend: how to wear this look. Well, ladies, you have a lot more options than the men. Of course, the standard scarf worn around the neck works well, and it will always be a great option if you are a little less willing to try the other looks. It is still very much in style to drape the scarf long or short around the neck. Another option is to wear the scarf around the waist as a belt. This looks great in both fabrics, and definitely shows that you know how to step outside the box. This look was all up and down the fall runway, from Dolce and Gabbana to Gucci. The last way to wear the scarf (for the ladies) is as a top. This is definitely a trendsetter style. Try wearing the scarf as a top over another top to add a pop of color to an outfit.
And finally, the guys: men, the scarf is a great option to wear instead of a tie to work, or just to add a pop of color to a more casual look. If you choose to dress the scarf up, you should wear it shorter and closer to the neck; the casual version can be longer and looser.
